SYDNEY’S Damien ‘kpii’ Chok has fallen just short of a multi-million dollar tournament, but is still taking home almost $US1 million for his efforts.

Kpii’s team Newbee fell to Team Liquid in the Grand Finals of The International 2017. The 3-0 loss was the first clean sweep in International Grand Finals history.
But having been a key reason for Newbee’s second-place finish, kpii has plenty to be proud of. And the nearly $A5 million second prize - which will see him take home around $A1 million - is a reasonable consolation

A crowdfunded $A30 million prize pool was on offer at the richest esports tournament in history, which saw the 18 best Dota 2 teams in the world travel to Seattle to battle it out in the five-on-five fantasy battle game.
Newbee qualified for the Grand Final after battling through the winner’s bracket, with kpii arguably being the team’s most important player in the preliminary finals on Saturday morning.
The champions, Team Liquid, completed an incredible run with the Grand Finals win. They had to win a series earlier in the day as well, vanquishing Chinese squad LGD.Forever Young in a 2-1 series.
It was the first International win for seven-time tournament competitor and team captain Kuro ‘KuroKy’ Takhasomi, who was on the losing end of the only ever 3-2 Grand Finals in 2013.

It also gave Jordanian star Amer ‘Miracle-’ Al-Barkawi - generally believed to be the best player in the world - his first International.
Team Liquid won six straight do-or-die elimination series on route to the title.
The other Australian competitor at the event, Anathan ‘ana’ Pham, won around $US120k after his OG squad finished 7th-8th.
